What if we’ve been given the wrong operating instructions? What if everything you have been taught about how to set and achieve a goal is wrong? This is precisely what behavioral change expert, Adele Spraggon, suggests and she can prove it. Drawing on the most recent findings in brain research along with inspiring stories of breakthroughs and triumphs from her clients, Adele will talk about how almost any obstacle can be overcome with the right operating instructions. Adele is the award-winning author of the book Shift: 4 Steps to Personal Empowerment.
Here are some questions I asked Adele that you will benefit from by listening to her interview:
- In your work as a change expert, you suggest that the traditional approaches to goal setting run contrary to the latest findings in brain research. Please explain this.
- How do these findings change the way we are taught to set and achieve our goals?
- What problems do you see amongst your clients when they use a traditional approach to goal setting and achievement?
- What is the better way to set and achieve a goal?
- What results do people experience when they align with how their brain is working?
Learning how to rebuild communication between the brain hemispheres results in a much more effortless approach to goal achievement. Often a person ends up exceeding their own expectations.

Dr. McGilchrist has discovered that it’s not what the hemispheres are doing but ‘how’ they are doing it, with each hemisphere responsible for maintaining a different level of awareness.
Our traditional approaches to goal setting and achievement rely primarily on the left’s narrow focus to detail. This can frequently lead to frustration and the person believing that there is something wrong with them – there isn’t. It is just that the narrow focus done by the left brain is only aware of what it already knows and lacks the capacity to uncover the optimal solutions needed for the job. New solutions need access to the broad open awareness that is available only in the right brain. Decades of education, however, has left most people mostly cut off from the right brain.

As for practical tips, that’s a little trickier. Because I am teaching how to rebuild communication, it does take time. However, I find that people find it helpful just to know that it is not them, but rather, how they have been taught to set and achieve their goals.
