Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of a work goal can be difficult. Motivation is high in the beginning of a project, and then seems to taper off as time goes on. However, there are techniques that can be employed to be able to stay on course. Being results-driven provides a clear path of the direction you need to go in order to achieve them. Let’s explore 8 techniques to help you stay focused on getting the results you want.
- Proper Planning for Results
Create a detailed action plan for achieving the results you desire before you lose focus. Planning your daily, weekly and monthly objectives around the end results though, makes you more efficient and productive. This means writing down exactly what you want to achieve and the means to get there. Make sure the results, and the plan to get there, are specific and include weekly or monthly targets. Then your daily tasks, such as phone calls, emails, and projects should center around the results.
- Perform a SWOT Analysis
Part of getting to those desired results is realizing what challenges you will be up against. Performing a SWOT analysis of strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats should be a part of your strategic plan. It will give you an idea of your weaknesses and the challenges that might be coming down the road, so you can prepare for them. This will keep you from falling off track.
- Mission Statement
Your company most likely has a mission statement. If not, you need one. But what about you? A mission statement will help steer your time and efforts toward those results. You can start by asking yourself how you will conduct your day differently with those results in mind. Your individual mission statement should be about 4-5 sentences and visible to you every day, so you don’t forget what you are after. When you lose focus, go back to the mission statement for re-centering.
- Create Milestones
Long-term results can be difficult to remain focused on. Break that end-goal up into smaller pieces, so you don’t lose motivation. A set of milestones will help you move toward those results while keeping you on track. The milestones can be set daily, weekly or monthly, depending on the scope of your project. Smaller goals are more reasonable to achieve than one big goal and will force you to check on your progress more often. You can even set the same activity to do every week and review your progress, which I strongly recommend you do.
- Prioritize
Now that you have a broad strategic plan and smaller goals, you need to prioritize your actions. Decide what actions are going to be able to move you along to getting those results and align your daily tasks with them. Giving in to procrastination will inevitably happen from time to time, but it is important to get back to your goals soon after.
To help you and your team be even more time efficient, use a Prioritized Action List (PAL). This is a list of everything you have to do, so you don’t have sticky notes, pieces of scrap paper laying around, or things in your head that you are trying to remember or afraid you will forget. Everything on the list in a priority order – hence the name – so you are more focused and on target to getting the most important tasks/activities done very single day. Some online to-do lists can be customized to be more like a Prioritized Action List. - Use the 15-minute Rule
This is a great trick that results-oriented people use. When you find yourself losing focus, use the 15-minute rule. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Do one of the tasks in your milestones for 15 minutes. Once the timer goes off, you can choose to stop or keep going. The idea is that the momentum you have generated within those 15 minutes will drive you to continue the task.

- Eliminate Distractors
The majority of things that happen are not emergencies that we have to take care of right away. Let people and unimportant tasks wait. Most of the time, these situations do resolve on their own without you having to get caught up in them. By not responding to everything right away, you will weed out the time wasters who get hung up on inconsequential things. They simply won’t bother you anymore because you are too busy.
- Stay Motivated
Staying motivated long-term is the hardest part for most people. Using motivational techniques will help to shift your focus to the results. Whether it be motivational quotes, videos, listening to music, The Accountability Minute Flash Briefing, or TED Talks, use whatever it takes to get you going. It also helps to have someone else to talk to about what you want to achieve that will also help you stay on track. This could be a friend, colleague, family member, or an Accountability Coach.
A game plan will help you get the results that you want. Without it, it will not be possible to accomplish what you want to do in the time frame you desire. Checking in on your progress daily, weekly, and monthly will motivate you to continue the path to accomplishment of your goals, so you can enjoy your ideal business and ideal life..
