How to Win the Willpower Battle

November 17, 2022 by Anne Bachrach Leave a Comment

Doing business is a battle of willpower. As a business professional or entrepreneur, the challenge lies solely in you to succeed in your chosen area of business. You are required to manage, control, motivate, and inspire yourself and your team members to achieve your firm’s goals.

Your willpower is the ability to control your thoughts, desires, and actions in a beneficial way to you and any situation you find yourself in.

When thinking of your willpower and how to control it and win its ever-raging battle, it is important to study the fundamental elements of willpower, which include:

  • The Powers of Self-Control

This involves saying ‘no’ when you want to say it, and saying ‘yes’ when you want to say ‘yes’ too. It’s important to say exactly what you mean without blurring the lines. You can analyze your thoughts and wants and translate them into clear decisions that have a great impact.

With adequate self-control, you can change the structure of your life and your business effectively.

  • The Power of Desire

Human life is plagued with desire. Desires to grow and reach for more to be even more successful. The difference between you and the rest of the world is what this desire means for you. In business, the phrase ‘I want’, signifies a power to keep you focused on a long-term goal.

The power of desire creates a suitable balance to the rigidity of the powers of self-control because it lets you envision the future and work towards it.

The battle of willpower continuously rages in high achievers and professionals. The need to attain a certain position and the journey to reach it is plagued by indecisions, stress, doubt, worries, and exhaustion.

Choosing whether to stay on the course you have set or to give up, is what determines if you’ll win the battle of willpower.

Let’s explore four steps on how to win the willpower battle.

  1. Make Yourself the Winner in Advance

When you think you are the winner, you become the winner by adopting a winner’s mindset. In business, you have to continuously challenge yourself by strengthening your will to keep up with external forces beyond your control.

By doing this, you will be willing to put in more hours, make better decisions, optimize your services and activities, and work professionally and productively. When you make yourself the winner in your mind’s eye, you challenge yourself to become what you desire.

  1. Understand the Enemy

What is holding you back? What is consistently shaking your will? What has caused you to falter even when you know it shouldn’t be happening?

When you understand your enemy, you are shining a light in the dark that helps you face your fears and strengthens your will. By understanding your enemy, you are shining a light on the excesses, inadequacies, and challenges you face in your business.

When you understand the enemy, you can exploit its weaknesses. You learn to read the signs that cause you to fail and cultivate habits and solutions that help you avoid or overcome these shortcomings.

By understanding your enemy, you bolster your willpower and desire to achieve success in the face of adversity.

  1. Plan Your Attack

When you understand your enemy in every way, you can plan an attack tailored to its specifications using all that you have learned, its negative traits, warning signs, and patterns.

When planning your attack, ensure that you go through it in an organized manner. Simply going half-cocked will not solve your problem. You can win the battle with your willpower by strategically planning to cover your bases and any other holes in your plan.

  1. Declare War

You recognize that there is a battle that needs to be won, and you understand that there are steps that should be undertaken to win this war. You need to believe that to win that battle, some things have to change. If you don’t believe that some things need to change, it is futile to begin the war because failure is imminent.

To declare war, identify the shortcomings, challenges, and failures you have encountered. Then make a detailed plan on how to conquer and avoid the failures you have encountered.

In your business, it can be small habits that affect your productivity, improve your time management skills, cultivate better habits, get financial advice, or specialist advice on turning your business around.

The most important aspect of this is to identify that there is a war to be won and take action to this effect.

When fighting the battle against your willpower, understand that you need to take it easy on yourself. Remember that you understand yourself. Pay attention to the fact that your willpower was borne of similar situations that you have gone through and have studied your most likely outcomes.

Follow each plan accordingly and restrategize as you go along. Ensure that you believe in yourself, your needs, and your abilities, and you can function optimally in ways that allow you to be even more successful.

Testimonials

I’ve sometimes thought of myself as not coachable – fits & starts on progress – but when I looked at where I’ve come, I can tell it works. This year, I’ve experienced over 50% growth – and with that growth came some confidence… confidence to finally go after what I know I should have done – we’ve added a flat-fee-only option to our offerings, and that’s ALL I’ll be targeting for 2014 and beyond. With that under our belts, I can foresee another 50% growth year for each of the next 2 years!

Mind over matter, right? Sometimes, that’s easier said than done. When we’re faced with a laundry list of to-dos and with not enough time in the day, it can be easier to distract ourselves and push things off to the next day. And when more items get added to our list, it becomes overwhelming, and we continue to procrastinate even more. A vicious cycle, but one that can be overcome. That’s the good news!
